I have an old friend who would always look at me and ask, "Kim...What's it all about?" It was an ongoing joke of sorts that we posed to one another during different moments in our lives. You know the kind. The kind that wakes you in the middle of the night, that makes your stomach turn or just the ones that make you go hmm. Well that friend has since moved away, and while I don't verbalize this question out loud anymore I do find myself pondering over it occasionally. Especially now, during a hardship for many. Many of us have encountered experiences that we never expected as a result of the state of the economy. Coincidentally enough it is usually during the darkest times that we ask the question "What's it all about?”
What is it all about? If you stop for a moment, find a quiet place, close your eyes and breathe, I believe the answer always presents itself. During these times be reminded that family is safe and healthy, there is a roof over your head and loved ones surrounding you. I think that in an attempt to win the almighty race we forget why we are running. Is the finish line really the greatest part? Possibly. Completing a task always gives a sense of accomplishment but when we break through that ribbon and the race is over we’re almost always left with a sense of longing. Anticlimactic so to speak. I think we tend to overlook the whole experience of the race. The many small steps taken to reach the finish line. These are the experiences we encounter during the race... the trip on our shoe lace that we recovered from, the man with the tight spandex shorts and head band that kept us amused throughout, the way the water quenched our thirst more than ever before. These moments, these small occurrences, are really what make up the journey we tend to take for granted. And while there is pain involved in our journey there is also the satisfaction that comes from our persistence to keep running. The finish line may mark the end but is only one small part.
I truly believe that these troubling times we are living in have forced us to examine our lives and appreciate the experiences we encounter with our loved ones. It has for me. I have reflected on my family, my life and my career. Recognizing the importance of all I long for a way to have all aspects of my life “soulful”. So it got me thinking of another question. How can I incorporate something soulful into my career? Something that would bring joy not only to me but to those I interact with on a regular basis.
It is through this contemplation that I came up with a project, or leg of my marathon so to speak, that I would like to share with you. Starting 2011 I will be launching, or sharing, the Experience Campaign. During this campaign I will be providing the opportunity for experiences to all those who have contributed to the success of my career. All of you have kept me in your thoughts when it has come to real estate and I wanted to return the favor by keeping you in mine and providing you the chance to experience some of the many beautiful things Charleston has to offer. When it is all said and done I would like to know that I may have played a small part in your race by providing you with a distraction from the running. And if ever you are asked, "What's it all about?" you can simply answer.....THE EXPERIENCE.
Looking forward to a beautiful new year with the knowledge that it is the sum of the parts that make the whole.
